More than 100 grandfriends of children in grades Pre-K to five came to FFS on October 7, 2016 to see where their grandchildren learn, explore, play, and reflect. Children introduced their grandfriends to their teachers, showed them their classrooms, sat with them during Meeting for Worship, and worked together to make a framed piece of art to remember the day.
The children beamed as their excited eyes demonstrated their enthusiasm and pride to show off their classrooms and school.
For their part, the grandfriends enjoyed spending time with their beloved grandchildren and getting a sense of their school day. Many grandfriends were impressed with the quiet, reflective nature of Meeting for Worship and the school’s focus on mindfulness. “I’m so happy that they have time to quiet themselves,” Rosemarie Walsh, grandmother to fourth grader Dash, said about the mindfulness students are practicing. The Grandfriends also enjoyed classroom activities such as a sing along with Teacher Stephan and his ukulele in the third grade room, time at centers with Teacher Trish and the kindergartners, and group interviews led by the fifth graders.
Fifth grader, Ruth, concluded “I like that the day helped our grandparents to know our school a little better.”
Grandfriends were also our first visitors to the just completed NEST (Center for Nature Studies, Exploration, Science, and Technology), and were thrilled to see the lively new spaces that their grandchildren will enjoy, including the Innovation Workshop where STEM classes will take place and the Nature Learning Lab, an outdoor classroom and area for creative play.
